Thanks to its favourable location on the Rhine and the trade routes that cross here, Cologne was an important trading location from early on. Today, Cologne is of international importance as an economic and cultural metropolis. Cologne is also one of the most important tourist destinations in Europe. The High Cathedral Church of St Peter, better known as Cologne Cathedral, plays a large part in this.
1248 the foundation stone of Cologne Cathedral was laid.
The carnival stronghold is also the largest centre of education and research in western Germany and an important trade fair location.
