The cathedral city of Cologne has more than one million inhabitants. This makes it not only the most populous city in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, but also the fourth largest in Germany.

Early on, Cologne was an important trade location due to its favourable location on the Rhine and the trade routes crossing here. Today, Cologne has international significance as an economic and cultural metropolis.

1248 the foundation stone for Cologne Cathedral was laid.

Furthermore, Cologne is one of the most important travel destinations in Europe. A large part of this is due to the High Cathedral Church of St. Peter, better known as the Cologne Cathedral.

However, the carnival stronghold is also the largest education and research location in western Germany and an important trade fair location.
